  • MKA: Sue Cannella
  • Region: Currently residing in Weare, NH - Returning to the Stonemarche fold after 4 years in Atlantia. Stonemarche is my SCA home of origin. I received my AoA at our Baronial Investiture event
  • Era: Italian Renaissance - circa 1470's to 1490's.
  • Joined SCA: Late summer / early fall of 1986. My first event was the very first Harpers' event up north in Lisbon. I was very promptly hooked and have never looked back!
  • Persona: I am the granddaughter and only surviving heir of a very wealthy and influential Dom of one of the great family trade dynasties of Renaissance Italy. Our villa is on the outskirts of Florence, and is quite grand in the manner of the period. Grandfather brought back cinnamon trees from Ceylon on one of his trade ships and planted them around the villa. Then he called it Cinnamon Grove. The trees did not do well in the Italian climate, but the name for the villa remained. As I was orphaned at the tender age of three, and being his only heir, Grandfather chose to raise me himself rather than place me in the care of the good holy sisters of the nunnery. Hence he saw that I was educated well beyond what was considered suitable for women. I have also enjoyed the advantage of some extensive travel with him on his many caravans throughout the knowne world, along the vast network of the Silk Road, and on his trade ships to North Africa. Of course, he was a practical man as well, and saw clearly the merit of a woman's hand in the rearing of a girl-child of tender years; so he engaged a suitable French governess for me. From her I learned lacemaking and fine needlework, as well as the French language. Perhaps most significantly, Grandfather never tried to force me into a marriage against my wishes. Quite naturally, he did encourage a fair number of eligible suitors; and he did set aside a generous dowery for me. But he never sought the services of a marriage broker nor in any way insisted that I must marry at all. Rather, he often allowed me to assist him with the keeping of his books and records on our many trade journeys. (Meanwhile, even after 20 years, my personna is still developing. I may eventually have to assume respectable widow-hood, but only time will tell.... )
**Note: Some time after I developed this personna, I suddenly came to realize something interesting. This is my paternal grandfather. Mundanely my parents are living, and I knew both my maternal grandparents and my paternal grandmother. But my paternal grandfather is the one person of my real family of whom I have no memory. I think he saw me, but I was two or less when he died, so I never had a relationship with him - until the SCA. Also, I chose both the name and personna based on some undocumented but very plausible family history. My mundane surname, Cannella, is the Italian word for Cinnamon. Supposedly, at the time of the Renaissance, or perhaps earlier, at the time of Marco Polo, the original Cannellas really were merchants in the Far Eastern spice trade.

  • Activities: I'm a seamstress mundanely, so definitely sewing / garbmaking is a major focus for me. I also ride sidesaddle and have interest in things equestrian. I play a bit with lacemaking, needlework, beadwork, and some calligraphy and illumination. And I always enjoy helping out in the kitchens and serving at feast. Properly done table service is an art unto itself. I'm also interested in learning to do mosaics and reverse painting on glass. I also enjoy breadbaking and have a special interest in learning to make cheese
